Cinnamon is the bark of a tree!

Did you know that plants are made up of different “parts?” Listen to this song by the fabulously named Banana Slug String Band.  Their popular tune Roots, Stems Leaves. focuses on the plant parts that we eat. Do you know what they are? Can you give some examples of each?  No peeking!

Roots: carrots, beets, parsnips, rutabaga, radishes

Leaves: lettuce, spinach, chard, kale, cabbage

Stems: asparagus, kohlrabi, bamboo shoots, nopales (cactus), sugar cane

Flowers: artichoke, cauliflower, broccoli, nasturtiums, calendula

Fruits: peaches, persimmons, jujubes, kiwis, tomatoes (yep, anything that comes from a flower, even zucchini!)

Seeds: sunflower, soy nuts, walnuts, sesame seeds, peas, pomegranates

Aside from cinnamon, another type of bark that was popular was white pine bark, which Native Americans used to take from trees. Travelers in forests also use it on journeys. Wonder what it tastes like? Sounds like a good idea for a school project. Do some research and get back to me! And each time you sit down to a meal,  see how many plant parts you can ID. 😉
